PANTHERS/PURPLES

PANTHERS

PANTHERS  2014
This is a song to practise the days of the week and school subjects.

14th October 2014

A useful list of vocabulary. You can extend the freetime activities that the children talk about, and there are lists for a lot of other things too.

21st October 2014

You could do the song which I have suggested for Lions, it’s a good sing a long chorus and a bit of a tongue twister. The Dolphins song could also be used for this level.
Also it is possible that we will be doing a competition for Haiku poems about Halloween (ask Jerry) and you will find resources (a description of how to write a Haiku poem and examples) on the www.bcnprimary.pbworks.com site. Special days/Halloween
This is a perfect activity for this age and makes them think about pronunciation.
Acrostic poems are also a good idea at this level.

Horrible noises
Afraid
Lots of sweets
Lightening
Owls
Witches
Exciting
Eating chestnuts
Night

There are Halloween flashcards on the LearnEnglishKids site and some big flashcards on the bcnprimary.pbworks.com site bighalloweenflashcards[1].doc

Another site, (you will LOVE this one)where you will find some fantastic masks and things for kids to make for Halloween is

4th November 2014
On this day (4th November 1922) Tutankhamun’s tomb was discovered. A good one for practising Past Simple, as is the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9th November 1989.
Remember, remember the 5th November !!!!! There is material at the back of the book in Find Out 5

If you are working with animals at the moment, then you have an example of a writing task on the wiki at http://bcnprimary.pbworks.com/w/browse/#view=ViewFolder&param=the%20frog%20writing%20model
Lesson plan
1. The students read the description of the frog and guess what animal it is.
2. Show them the version with the photo.
3. They bring in photos of their favourite animals (or draw them) and on a separate piece of paper they write a description of the animal. These are stuck around the class and labelled with numbers. The students then go round and read each description and put the name of an animal for each number.
4. Students stick the picture of their animal next to their description.
5. They go round again and check to see how many they got right.
6. They stick the picture and the description

together on a card to make a poster to decorate the class.

Anyone know what this is ?

Another activity that is always successful is to get the children to write the alphabet down the left hand side of the page or in two columns if necessary, then they have quarter of an hour to find an animal for each letter. You may need to read the list to fill in some of the more difficult ones !!!
http://bcnprimary.pbworks.com/w/file/75356861/alphabetical%20list%20of%20animals%281%29.doThis is a great activity if you are subbing !!!!!!!
Afterwards you can look on Google images and show the children the animals they didn't know.

1. It may seem a bit similar to the idea about the animal posters, but kids love writing about their favourite famous people. Get a list of who their favourite people are and tell them to bring in a photo of that person next lesson(you also download a photo of each one for the students in b/w - it would be very unusual if they all brought in a photo on the right day!!!) As with the frog writing, you can get your students to write about the person (give them an example piece of writing as a reading before they do this) and the others guess who it is.
2. Designing a wanted poster is a fun way to write about people (he wears/lives/eats/rides/smokes/drinks/walks/likes)
On the Times Educational Supplement site you can find Police Identikit Information - this is quite a high level - There is a power point giving support and suggested vocabulary. There is also an 'Identikit Worksheet' and a 'Wanted Poster'   template. (You need to have an account, but it is free and easy to set up - and well worth it ! )
More wanted poster templates of pirates and cowboys at
Also look at

The elephant song (Cool Tunes for Kids by Eric Herman)
and you can find a word search and a flip chart (if you have the programme uploaded on your computer) at

You could treat your kids to a short clip of the film of Alice in Wonderland (As it's her birthday!!!)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tNXpnufLVkc Alice falls down the rabbit hole. Get them to guess what happens next.
And then
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxsHkI0-dPM Alice shrinks. Which could lead on to work on comparatives and superlatives
.
Also, Nicole has made some material that you can share if you have a Panthers class.
She’s made some extra materials to go with The Elephant Song above.  The video link is at the bottom of the following article.

It’s especially interesting for Primary Purple teachers doing Unit 2.

The ‘Animal Wordsearch has all the animals from the song and there’s a worksheet named ‘The Elephant Song’ with before and after activities. Both of these documents are here:

T:\Shared Area\2 By teacher\Nicole\Primary Purple 2014-15 or http://bcnprimary.pbworks.com/w/browse/#view=ViewFolder&param=The%20Elephant%20Song

She has also prepared an IWB flipchart with the animal vocab from the song (you could do this as a team matching game). It’s kept in the same folder under ‘The Elephant Song’.or at http://bcnprimary.pbworks.com/w/browse/#view=ViewFolder&param=The%20Elephant%20Song

3rd December 2014

You can make Christmas cards, which often seems a little more grown up to Panthers and can be just as much fun.

  • Get them to bring in old Christmas cards to do collages (I have a big stock if anyone wants some – give me a day’s warning) and remember to concentrate on the text that they write inside the card
OR
  • Use white card and decorate the card however you feel is best, use silver paper, white cotton wool and coloured card.

Some of you may not be aware that you have a lot of material at the following link(only available onsite). There is a bit too much to upload onto the blog or the wiki. There are lesson plans and worksheets and some ideas for writing tasks.

Directions If you haven’t got too big a class and you’re doing directions. Arrange the desks in your classroom in rows with spaces between the desks (if you’re offsite you probably won’t have to change anything !!). Put the children into pairs and give each pair a blindfold. Name each corner of the classroom with a colour. Students guide their partners from one corner of the room to a different corner, giving them instructions such as “turn left/right”, go straight on, stop, turn round etc. and making it as long as possible. The unblindfolded partner also makes sure their partner doesn’t walk into anything or get hurt !! The blindfolded partner has to guess which corner they are in before they take off the blindfold. You can also get one pair doing this at a time, and the others in the class correct the instructions, or help to give intructions in turn.

If you’re doing Present Continuous, or want to do a little bit of revision. Get your class to close their eyes and listen to all the noises that they can hear and imagine what is happening. They write down what they heard and imagined and make a poem. Something along the lines of ……….
The children are learning,
The wind is blowing, the rain is falling
The cars are passing and the ambulance is going fast.
And then they can illustrate them.
